ANNOUNCEMENTS

President's Report

By Doni Wilson, ND, NYANP President

The vibe at the NYANP is all about awareness. Awareness, that is, for naturopathic medicine and the benefits received by those who seek it. On July 13, 2007 The Wall Street Journal published an article titled “The Unmedicated Mind“ in which several naturopathic doctors were interviewed. The article coincides with a new start for awareness building in New York.

Why is awareness important?
With awareness comes increased use of naturopathic care and greater support for licensure of naturopathic doctors. Awareness will help build more successful naturopathic practices and will create the kind of community consciousness that is necessary for legislators to feel confident saying that licensure for NDs needs to happen today.

How do we plan to build awareness?
Using marketing and advertising techniques, we will continue to “brand” our profession through a consistent look and message. We will choose opportunities to inform the public about naturopathic medicine. Meanwhile, we will collaborate with other businesses and organizations with a common message in order to mutually support each other.

This issue of the NYANP quarterly newsletter marks the launching of our new website, which is notable for several reasons. The NYANP website is the first to be lanched modeling after a national look set by the AANP. The site allows for easy transactions (you can become a member and sign up for our conference in just a few clicks). Find an ND, a trusted directory of NDs in NY (our professional members) is now self-editable and we also offer ad space for other membership types.

The third annual NYANP conference in NYC is another prime example of awareness building, especially in the professional community. We hope to attract practitioners of all types to this continuing education event focused on natural therapies for multiple health conditions and specialties, including cancer, metabolic syndrome, women’s health and children’s health. One highlight at the event will be a panel discussion on none other than the future of naturopathic medicine. Please do join us October 12th and 13th in NYC.

You can help with awareness building in quick and easy ways!
Members (free) and non-members can post events and lectures on our website. That way visitors to the site will find more opportunities to learn about naturopathic medicine in person. You may purchase NYANP brochures through the website to distribute in your office or local area. We also have NYANP T-shirts that allow you to wear the message of naturopathic medicine.

NYANP President's Report
"United HPA Gala: Assembly Member Tedisco, Margaret Buhrmaster, Donielle Wilson.

Please enjoy this newsletter.
We are excited to share news about progress in the licensure effort and events intended to celebrate the work of amazing individuals such as Margaret Buhrmaster, recent recipient of the Integrated Health Advocate of the Year Award by United Holistic Practitioners Association. In this issue you will find an article from our featured supporter, Metagenics, information on natural therapies for hypertension by Dr. Roberts, an update on student participation by NCNM student and NYANP assistant secretary, Sarah Giardenelli, a book review on The City of Dreams, and a spotlight on Dr. Woodbine’s work to support New Orleans relief.

We all love to share information about the health choices that have changed our lives and the lives of people we know. Right? That is exactly what it is going to take to feed the stream of awareness. Please let us know if you have ideas or connections to help.

Until soon, thank you!

Legislative Update

JoAnn Yanez, ND, NYANP Legislative Vice-President

NYANP Legislative Update
"Clockwise from top left: Doni Wilson and Assembly Member Sam Hoyt; Pina LoGiudice, Ed Murach, Assembly Member Ortiz, Doni Wilson, Peter Bongiorno; JoAnn Yanez and Congressman Serrano; Geovanni Espinosa, JoAnn Yanez, Heather Greenlee and Assembly Member Denny Farrell

I would like to start off this update with a BIG thank you! This past legislative session has been marked by amazing strides and accomplishments, none of which could have happened without help from our members, patients, corporate sponsors and donors. Hundreds of you have taken time from your busy lives to write a letter, make a donation, call an elected official or even pay a visit to their district office. Your contributions have made a difference and we hope you can continue and even increase your level of support. It takes a village to license a new profession, and it makes me proud to see our community come together for our common goals.

Thanks to your hard work, Naturopathic Medicine is now on the map in New York State. This past session saw reintroduction of our licensing bill, our third annual lobby day, and outstanding increases in awareness and support for naturopathic licensure. Our bill was introduced for the first time as a unibill. This means that the bill is identically represented in both the senate and assembly and demonstrates more validity of our efforts and unity of the senate and assembly sponsors. To use an Albany term, it makes our efforts look more ‘real’ to legislators and shows them that this is an issue to take seriously.

One of our major focuses this past session was to build public and legislative awareness for naturopathic medicine; that is raising awareness to a fever pitch, where there is no other choice BUT to license NDs. We increased our attendance at state events, including the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus, the Somos El Futuro state Hispanic legislative event, political rallies for presidential candidates with Bill and Hillary Clinton in attendance and fundraisers for current elected officials.

Weekly visits were made to Albany during the legislative session, marking our presence and delivering our message. The results include inclusion in a Governor Spitzer’s press conference on the healthy school lunches initiative, meetings with the governor’s office and other state agencies, and an increase in the number of Assembly sponsors on the licensure bill from 28 to 59 in just six months!!!

Naturopathic medicine now has a real face in Albany and we need to continue that presence and increase our key contacts to make licensure happen THIS YEAR. Take a moment and thank yourself. I invite you to think about how you have helped and what you can continue to do to make licensure a reality.

State Licensing, the Keys to Success

By Karen Howard, AANP Executive Director

You have most likely heard the adage, politics is like making sausage. The result might be great, but you don’t really want to know how it was made. And as foreign as eating sausage is to naturopathic doctors, so too can be the process of politics. NYANP has demonstrated enormous tenacity and endurance in its quest for naturopathic licensure. Those of you who have participated understand that everything in politics is about relationships, yet nothing is personal. That while you have input, you have no control. The NYANP leadership, with you, the membership and supporters, have made NYANP a major player in Albany. I would hazard to guess that every member of the State Legislature has heard from one of you and/or met with a member of the NYANP Board. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the NYANP leadership and all of you for that accomplishment. And yet, everything hinges on your continued dedication, contribution and the grassroots effort to engage your patients – constituents of Senators and Assemblymembers. Your colleagues on the AANP Board, in North Carolina, Colorado, Massachusetts (and other states working on licensure), and the staff of the AANP are traveling with you in this journey. It’s yours to have. Let’s make it next year by working together. Here we come 2008!

Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure

Kathia Roberts Moore ND, DPhyt

High Blood pressure (hypertension) is marked by a raised systolic & diastolic blood pressure. Family history of hypertension, obese individuals, contraceptive use, kidney disease, pregnant women and black ethnicity increase risk of developing high blood pressure in ones lifetime. A normal reading should be a 120 (systolic) /80 (diastolic), a systolic reading greater than 120 and a diastolic greater than 90-100 is considered elevated. Today, many doctors are considering any pressure over 120/70 to be suspect. Certain medications, social drugs, alcohol, caffeine products, smoking, lack of exercise, high sodium consumption, licorice, ginseng, stress and unresolved prolonged emotional concerns may also increase blood pressureWonderful ways to help decrease blood pressure, or prevent hypertension include:

Diet: Consume plenty of garlic, potassium, essential fatty acids, wild oily fish, anti-oxidants like rooibos tea, fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables. Reduce intake of refined, processed, saturated, salty and sugary foods. Avoid environmental and produce toxins by eating organic
Lifestyle: Increase exercise, relaxation and breathing techniques. Limit smoking and alcohol consumption. Attend to emotional concerns via reflection and/or Vibrational/Psycho therapy
Supplementation: Take Vitamin C (especially if you are a smoker), Magnesium, Potassium, Coenzyme Q-10, Reishi Mushroom Extract, Cod Liver Oil and Borage Oil, Dandelion-, Valerian- and Yarrow tea. Visit your Naturopathic Doctor to adjust dosages and protocol to your individual health needs and to avoid drug-nutrient interactions

Health tip: Balance Your Blood Sugar and Feel Better!

Donielle Wilson, ND

Blood sugar is one of the best first steps to healing most health issues, including anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, high cholesterol, menstrual irregularities and digestive complaints. Even when standard blood tests show that your blood sugar is normal, you will find that efforts to minimize the fluctuations in blood sugar levels throughout the day will help you to feel better.

Quick Ideas for balancing blood sugar:
  • Eat every 3 to 4 hours
  • Include protein every time you eat, especially in the morning
  • Carry foods with you that contain protein. Examples include: protein shake, protein bar, nuts, sunflower seeds, and nut butter.
  • Choose a variety of complex carbohydrates (whole grains, brown rice, quinoa), which are high in fiber.
  • Sample meal: Brown rice, broccoli with fish/chicken/turkey
  • Try to eat right when you start to feel your blood sugar dropping instead of waiting until it is really low.
  • When your blood sugar is low avoid eating something high in sugar, which may raise your blood sugar too much. Choose a snack as described above instead.

A new study of twins finds that childhood sun exposure may reduce the risk for multiple sclerosis (MS) by almost 60% when children are exposed to 2 to 3 hours of sun a week possibly by “altering the cellular immune response, or indirectly, by producing vitamin D," according to study author Dr. Thomas Mack. Drinking more than one diet soft drink daily is associated with a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome. According to Dr Ramachandran Vasan, "it actually doesn't matter if the soft drink is regular or diet. There was an association of increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome with both types of drinks." Circulation, July23, 2007.

Smoking is down sharply among New York City women, according to data released by the New York City Health Department. The number of female smokers has fallen by 123,000 in New York City since 2002 – and young women are now about half as likely to smoke as young men. Unfortunately, to combat these trends, R.J. Reynolds has developed a new cigarette that features flowery ads and hot pink packaging. NY Health E News, March 20, 2007

More Naturopathic Doctors Making a Difference

Research completed by Heather Greenlee, ND, MPH was published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention in August 2007. Dr. Greenlee reports that “the most interesting finding in the study using naturopathic dietary changes & botanicals in premenopausal women is that the botanicals made some changes in androgen levels in the early phase of the menstrual cycle, but not the later phases.” Dr. Greenlee is completing her PhD at Columbia University where she will continue in a faculty position.

Roseanne Nenninger, ND recently completed a week of service with Doctors Without Borders in Guyana, South America where she healed hundreds of patients with homeopathy.

Bernie Noe, ND, President of Green Mountain Wellness Solutions, Inc in Vermont developed a corporate wellness program which recently received the Governor's top worksite wellness award for the second year in a row. Since inception of the ‘Jump Start to Better Health’ wellness program in January 2005, with health services provided by naturopathic doctors, medical claims costs have steadily decreased by 1.3% and 1.2% in 2006 and 2005, respectively. Over the three years immediately prior to program inception, medical claims costs had increased by an average of 26.9% annually. In addition to reductions in health care costs, there have also been significant reductions in clinical measures. In the first year alone, the incidence of high blood pressure decreased by 36% and multiple risks for heart disease decreased by 35%. Furthermore, excessive stress decreased by 24%, physical inactivity decreased by 21%, high cholesterol decreased by 17%, and obesity decreased by 15%.

Book Review

Pina LoGiudice ND, LAc – NYANP Executive Vice-President

The City of Dreams: A Novel of Early Manhattan by Beverly Swerling
The City of Dreams was recommended to me by a patient of mine who thought I would appreciate this historical novel on the beginnings of Manhattan. She was absolutely right! This multigenerational story follows the lives of the Turner family, and begins in New Amsterdam (in 1661) and traverses right through to the American Revolution. The aspect that I found most intriguing and enjoyable were the descriptions of the medicines, diseases and healing modalities used at the time. There were beautiful descriptions of the botanical medicines formulated and the apothecaries that developed from them. Lastly, there was a great detailed account in the battle between physicians and surgeons regarding who was deemed most appropriate to heal patients throughout the generations. This is an issue that is still alive and controversial today!

Recipe

by Peter Bongiorno ND, LAc

Rice Pancakes
1/2 cup ground cashews
1 1/2 cup amaranth, quinoa or rice flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. maple syrup
1 1/4 cup water
2 tbsp. Oil

Combine dry ingredients, mix well. Combine liquid ingredients in small bowl, mix well. Stir into dry ingredients. Cook pancakes on preheated, un-greased, non-stick griddle or fry pan. When bubbly and brown, turn. As batter thickens, add water, a tablespoon at a time to keep cakes thin. This is a nice recipe for those looking for a nice weekend homemade pancake treat, while being able to remain wheat and dairy free. Sometimes, I like to add cardammon to the syrup for an eastern spice extra. For some extra protein, you can also add a topping of warmed maple syrup with raw almond butter. Enjoy!

A new report on diabetes issued by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provides stark evidence of what healthcare professionals have long known: diabetes in New York City has reached epidemic proportions. According to the report, half a million city residents have been diagnosed with diabetes, while another 200,000 have it but don’t know it yet.

New Yorkers aren’t alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control, chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis have reached epidemic proportions in this country, cutting short the lives of 7 of 10 Americans each year and causing major limitations in activity for 1 in 10. Over 75 percent of our nation’s healthcare dollars are spent on conditions related to chronic diseases.

As a life sciences company interested in promoting health through therapeutic lifestyle changes, Metagenics espouses wellness and prevention as key components in the war against chronic disease. We support the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians’ efforts to increase the public’s awareness of the principles of naturopathic medicine.

Healthcare practitioners are in a unique position to help stem the tide of our nation’s chronic disease epidemic. By embracing therapeutic lifestyle changes, naturopathic doctors can make a difference.

“We applaud the efforts of the NYANP in bringing attention to this important healthcare discipline," said CEO Jeff Katke.

Metagenics was founded in 1983 with the mission of helping patients achieve their “genetic potential through nutrition.” Today, healthcare practitioners around the world rely on Metagenics to help improve their patients’ health and well-being. The company is a leader in the fields of nutrigenomics and functional medicine, and the premier manufacturer and distributor of science-based medical foods and nutraceuticals marketed to healthcare professionals.

Metagenics’ corporate headquarters are located in San Clemente, CA, with research and development and manufacturing facilities in Gig Harbor, Washington and Ithaca, New York. The 2006-2007 academic year was a landmark year for naturopathic medical student involvement in public awareness efforts and the students at the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) were tremendously involved. NCNM students were not only learning how to practice the medicine, but also how to advocate for the profession.

In October 2006 NCNM External Relations Director Susan Yirku, with the assistance of several students, took the lead in forming a student activation plan when she became aware of federal legislation that threatened the School as Lender program that enables funding of need based aid programs at all of the naturopathic schools. This activation plan proved useful in activating the student body when the same issue came up again this past summer 2007.

Beginning in the fall of 2006 NCNM students took part in coordinating and fundraising to send students to the NYANP’s Lobby Day so that in February 2007 NCNM was able to send its first ever delegation of 4 students and NCNM board member Ellen Goldsmith to this important event.

In January 2007, several NCNM students formed the NCNM Legislative Team (NLT) with a mission “to promote natural medicine through local, state and federal public awareness efforts.” In March 2007, 25 NCNM students along with several NDs and administrators went to Oregon’s capitol, Salem, to participate in the Oregon Association of Naturopathic Physician’s (OANP) first ever Lobby Day. In May 2007, 16 NCNM students were part of NCNM’s delegation to the Washington DC Federal Legislative Initiative (DC FLI), the profession’s national lobby day.

This year student involvement in the DC FLI was more important than ever as they asked Congress not only for support in the Indian Health Care Loan Repayment Program, but for inclusion in all of the federal loan repayment programs. Impressively, students were able to work together to raise funds enough to provide travel grants to all students who attended this event.

The above activities highlight only a fraction of what NCNM students helped to accomplish in public awareness in the 2006-2007 academic year. Many important contacts were made locally with legislators such as Oregon Congressmen David Wu and Senators Gordon Smith and Ronald Wyden and several other public awareness events were both coordinated and attended. This is indicative of the progress to come in the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year as the NCNM Student Legislative Team is getting geared up for another busy year in helping to advance the Naturopathic Profession.
